Terra Meiga Manor
Our Story - We are a family of four that has been living the expat life since 2016. Our dream has always been to one day take all the wonderful experiences we shared around the world and create our own little slice of Heaven.
Fast forward to 2020, after months of lockdowns and lots of idle time on our hands, we 'virtually' found an 18th century manor house in northwest Spain, full of history and potential, nestled on 20 acres and surrounded by hundreds more.
Join us on our journey as we explore the region and restore these enchanted lands (Terra Meiga) to their former glory, filled with vineyards, orchards, apiaries, farm animals and more. One day, we hope to open our doors to fellow adventurers looking for a unique and unforgettable old world experience.
House of Amarante Coat of Arms
Aldegunde, Spain. Never Heard of It!
Located in the province of Lugo, Galicia, about a 4.5 hour drive from Madrid, these ancient lands are full of archaeological wonders, settled in ancient times (before Christ) by Iberians, Celtic tribes and later the Romans. The first written records of this area, date back to 813 AD, during the reign of Alfonso II. These feudal lands were protected by the Knights Templar and ruled over many centuries by various nobles, most famous, the House of Amarante, who in 1487, was formally ceded these ancestral lands by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel, upon reunification of the Spanish kingdom.
A Hamlet of 5?
Yes, as of January 2022, there are only 5 inhabited homes in the hamlet of Aldegunde with only 7 year round inhabitants. Our family nearly doubled the population. We are in the heart of 'España Vaciada' or Empty Spain, where over the past 50 years, Spain's beautiful countryside, its heartland, has lost nearly 30% of its population.
It is the Way
El Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James passes near our beautiful hamlet. Every year, more than 300,000 people travel the oldest pilgramage route in Europe on foot, by bicycle or on horseback to the Cathedral of Santiago, the reputed burial place of Saint James the Great, the apostle of Jesus Christ. It is one of only three remaining churches in the world built over the tomb of an apostle of Jesus, the other two being St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City and St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica, Chennai in India. Check out our very own Camino Primitivo. It is the way.
